Acetyl-L-carnitine

Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is an amino-acid derivative involved in mitochondrial energy production and acetylcholine synthesis. Randomized trials support modest benefit in diabetic and other peripheral neuropathies, and some evidence suggests antidepressant effects in older adults, but cognitive-enhancement claims in healthy people are largely unproven. It is generally well tolerated.
