GABA
A supplemental form of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the central nervous system’s chief inhibitory neurotransmitter. Taken for relaxation, stress, and sleep support — often paired with L-theanine or magnesium.
Benefits
GABA is the brain’s main calming neurotransmitter; supplements are used to promote relaxation, ease occasional stress and anxiety, and support sleep. Some trials report reduced stress markers, and standardized "PharmaGABA" forms are studied for raising relaxing alpha-wave activity.
Risks
Oral GABA crosses the blood–brain barrier poorly, so its central effects are debated and may act partly through the gut and peripheral nervous system. Generally well tolerated; higher doses can cause drowsiness, tingling, flushing, or a brief drop in blood pressure. Use caution with sedatives or blood-pressure medication and before driving.
